New Hampshire Insurance Department Launches Weather Catastrophe Response Team to Support Consumers Affected by Severe Weather Events

CONCORD, NH (August 28, 2024) – Today, the New Hampshire Insurance Department (NHID) is launching a dedicated Weather Catastrophe Response Team, a coordinated, department-wide effort designed to support consumers in the aftermath of severe weather incidents.

This new team was established in response to recent weather-related incidents, including significant flooding in Cheshire County last year and ongoing flooding and microburst events throughout New Hampshire. These events have left many consumers facing substantial property damage and uncertainty about their insurance coverage.

“The mission of the New Hampshire Insurance Department is to protect and advocate for Granite State insurance consumers,” said DJ Bettencourt, Commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department. “The formation of the Weather Catastrophe Response Team is another way that we can further our commitment to helping residents navigate the complexities of insurance during challenging times. By working closely with state and federal partners, we will maximize the support available to those affected.”

Many residents struggle with the technicalities of their insurance policies, particularly when determining what is covered and what is not. The primary mission of the Weather Catastrophe Response Team will be to provide direct support to affected consumers, helping them understand their insurance coverage and assisting with the filing of insurance claims. If issues arise, the team will advocate on behalf of consumers and facilitate communication with insurance carriers.

Once immediate hazards have been addressed, the Weather Catastrophe Response Team will organize community outreach events in affected areas. During these events, NHID representatives will collaborate with other state and federal partners to provide comprehensive support to consumers. These efforts will ensure that residents receive accurate information and timely assistance, enhancing the overall response to weather-related disasters.

The Weather Catastrophe Response Team includes the following subject matter experts:

  • Commissioner DJ Bettencourt: As NHID Commissioner, Mr. Bettencourt offers a comprehensive understanding of the insurance industry, enabling him to address a wide range of topics related to recent storms and flooding.
  • Keith Nyhan, Deputy Commissioner: With his vast expertise in consumer protection and insurance regulations, Mr. Nyhan can provide invaluable information on insurance claims, coverage options, and the rights and responsibilities of policyholders affected by storms and flooding.
  • James Fox, Property & Casualty Director: Specializing in property and casualty insurance, Mr. Fox is a reliable source for understanding the intricacies of claims processes, policy coverages, and general insurance issues related to storm and flood damage.

The NHID encourages residents affected by recent weather events to reach out for support. For further information or to seek assistance, please contact the New Hampshire Insurance Department at (603) 271‐2261 or visit our website at https://insurance.nh.gov.

“Through this initiative, we aim to provide swift and effective assistance to those impacted by severe weather events, ensuring that they have the resources and support needed to recover,” said Keith Nyhan, Deputy Insurance Commissioner. “We are committed to standing by New Hampshire residents, offering expert guidance, and advocating on their behalf during these difficult periods.”
