New Product Highlights Remarkable Growth and Stability in New Hampshire’s Health Insurance Market
CONCORD, NH (August 14, 2024) – The New Hampshire Insurance Department (NHID) is excited to announce the continued success and growth of New Hampshire's individual health insurance market, marked by the arrival of WellSense Health Plan as a new participant. This addition is a strong indicator of the market's vitality and the successful reforms that have strengthened the state’s insurance landscape.
In 2017, New Hampshire’s individual health insurance market faced considerable challenges, with rising premiums and uncertainty about the future. However, through the leadership of the NHID, Governor Sununu, and bipartisan support from lawmakers, a series of strategic reforms were implemented that have since transformed the insurance market.
Reforms such as the 2018 Medicaid Expansion program transition and the establishment of a state reinsurance program have not only lowered premiums but also created a more competitive environment. The American Rescue Plan further supported these efforts, resulting in more affordable options for Granite Staters.
Today, New Hampshire’s individual health insurance market stands as a model of resilience and innovation. The arrival of WellSense Health Plan brings additional choice and competition, further benefiting consumers by offering more options at varying price points. This development reflects the continued success of New Hampshire’s free-market approach, which has consistently delivered some of the nation’s lowest health insurance premiums.
“We are thrilled to welcome WellSense Health Plan to New Hampshire’s health insurance market,” said New Hampshire Insurance Commissioner DJ Bettencourt. “Their entry underscores the strength of our market and promises to enhance the affordability and availability of health insurance for Granite Staters.”
